While no official statistics are held regarding the South African cosmetic industry, the numbers that continue to come out of the USA are very interesting, and the trends are quite similar to those in SA.
In 2007, close to 12 million cosmetic procedures (both surgical and non surgical) were performed in the USA. 18% of these were surgical, while 82% were non surgical. This is according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
The most popular surgical procedures for women were liposuction, followed closely by breast augmentation, while the most popular non surgical procedure was botox. The most popular surgical procedure for men was Liposuction, followed by eyelid surgery. The most common non surgical procedure was also botox, followed by laser hair removal.
Of all the procedures performed in the USA, 91% were female patients, 9% male.
In 2007, $13 billion was spent on cosmetic procedures, $8.3 billion being for surgical, and $4.7 being for non surgical.
In the 10 years, spanning from 1997 - 2007, there was a total increase of 457 % in the number of cosmetic procedures being performed. Surgical procedures increased by 114%, while non surgical procedures increased by 745 %.
