Through the natural aging process, our eyelids lose their elasticity and result in loose, hanging skin. Many people, who have a severe type of this condition, not only have to deal with the unattractive appearance of drooping eyelids but also suffer from impaired vision.

What does the Blepharoplasty procedure look like?

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a procedure that provides a solution to the above mentioned issues. Two separate treatments are used for the upper and lower eyelids:

  • Upper eyelid: An incision is made within the natural crease ain the upper eyelid. Excess fat and skin are removed, and the incision is closed with tiny stitches that leave a very light scar.
  • Lower eyelids: The incision is made just below the lashes in your eye’s natural lower crease. The fat, muscle and sagging skin is then redistributed. The stitches can be placed outside, or inside the lower eyelid – depending on where the initial incisions were made.

If your drooping eyelid is too close to your pupil, this procedure must be done in combination with another treatment, called ptosis, to adequately address the problem.

How long will recovery take?

The entire procedure takes less than two hours, after which you’ll spend time in a recovery room where you’re monitored for any potential complications. After this, you can leave and recover at home. An ointment will be provided by your doctor to prevent dryness of the eyes, and to help the healing of incisions without visible scars.

Although the incisions will appear red, and you’ll experience some puffiness and sensitivity – this will not last much longer than a week.

What is the cost of eyelid surgery?

This treatment varies in cost depending on the clinic, as well as the amount of skin and fat removal necessary. Upper eyelid rejuvenation generally costs between R 13 000 – 15 000, while the lower eyelid can reach up to R 20 000.

The upfront cost, as well as the recovery time, can set you back a good buck.
