Liposuction

Liposuction is a popular cosmetic surgery enhancement procedure that can be carried out on various parts of the body, in order to re-contour and sculpt. The procedure is also known as lipoplasty ("fat modelling"), liposculpture or suction lipectomy ("suction-assisted fat removal").

Body areas suited to Liposuction

The procedure is usually presented as an option for individuals who have an average body mass index (BMI) but experience problems with stubborn fatty deposits in specific areas of their bodies. These are areas that do not react to diet or standard exercise regimes, the cause of which is often genetic. Areas that frequently respond well to liposuction techniques include (but are not necessarily limited to) the upper arms, legs, back, breasts, waist, tummy, hips, as well as the face and neck.

The Liposuction Surgery

The procedure is performed using a small stainless steel tube, referred to as a 'cannula' that is inserted into the hypodermic fat layer through little incisions in the skin. The cannula is connected to a strong suction device that creates small tunnels through the fatty layers, and removes the fat as it is loosened. These tunnels collapse after surgery and the result is a superficially improved body contour.

The amount of fat removed during the procedure varies depending on the doctor, patient and method in question, but is usually less than 5 kg. This may seem like a small amount, but once the fat is removed the appearance of weight loss is often greater than expected as the body adapts.

When perusing liposuction information you will find that the procedure can be performed under both local and general anaesthetic, although most plastic surgeons recommend patients to opt for general.

Good Candidates for Liposuction

The safety of the procedure depends on the amount of tissue removed, as well as the choice of anaesthetic and the patient's overall health. Individuals who are good candidates for this type of surgery should have a regular body weight, be as fit as possible before surgery, and should not have smoked for several months as nicotine influences blood circulation. A good candidate for the treatment will also display realistic expectations and would not expect the procedure to solve unrelated issues, such as marital problems or social difficulties. Although the procedure can be performed at any age, it has to be noted that the best results have been reported by patients with firm, elastic skin.

Liposuction Finance

Liposuction financing options are becoming readily available all over the world, but it is important to remember that this procedure is in no way meant to be an alternative for regular exercise and a healthy diet. Liposuction cost is typically determined by the length of the procedure which is why detailed information is gathered regarding the patient before hand.

Body shape after Liposuction

After the surgery, the new body shape is more or less permanent. If a patient does gain a moderate amount of weight after liposuction, their figure will simply be a larger version of the new body shape. Fat cells that are removed by the treatment do not grow back. If the patient does not gain a large amount of weight the new silhouette will remain intact. Liposuction does not cheat the clock, however, and the aging process will bring about the associated changes in body shape. Nevertheless, the benefits of the procedure will always be apparent.

Recuperation after Treatment

Patients can anticipate an average 10 day recuperation period, and will most likely wear a special 'pressure' garment for up to 6 weeks after their liposuction procedure.
