Lasik Eye Surgery
Lasik eye surgery (also known as "corrective eye surgery") is one of the more popular eye procedures in the U.S, as well as in South Africa. Lasik eye surgery seeks to repair the way in which our eyes refract light. In a normal working eye, the lens of the eye works to refract light to the retina. A group of cells at the back of the eye then takes that light and transforms it into messages that can be seen and understood by the optic nerve of the brain. These messages are seen by the optic nerve as visual images. When one of these steps is faulty in some way, this affects the overall quality of sight.

Bladeless Surgery was first approved in 1995. PRK is a surgical procedure performed on an out patient basis in a lasik centre. The eye is first numbed with eye drops that include an anesthetic. The procedure is then performed with an excimer laser, which uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to very accurately remove minuscule amounts of tissue from the cornea, and in this way it is slightly reshaped. The success of this surgery is based upon the accurateness of the laser, and the ability to remove tissue that is tiny in size. Once the cornea has been reshaped, light is then refracted properly, and a clear focus is provided for the retina - this provides the clear vision. Both nearsighted and farsighted people can benefit from Lasik procedures. With nearsighted people, the cornea is flattened slightly, and with far sighted people, the cornea is made steeper.
