Hearing Aids
BTE hearing aids (behind the ear) are an excellent option for the hearing impaired. The savvy customer has three versions to choose from:

• Analogue Hearing Aid:

This is a behind the ear model that uses a plastic tube which is connected to a mould of the ear. The analogue device rests behind the ear with a plastic tube connected to the customised ear mould. At one time, this hearing aid was the only model available and the only one that could be purchased. The advancement of technology has incurred the creation of models with far greater auditory capabilities.

• Digital BTE Hearing Aid (a "fishhook" extension that fits behind the ear):

Behind and over the ear is the fitting procedure for this hearing device. The fishhook part fits over the front of the ear, pointing downwards and towards the ear canal. There are two openings; with one end of the tube connecting to the opening in the fishhook, and the other connecting through a tube that links to the mould in the ear canal.

• Digital Open Fit Hearing Aid:

Measuring only a third of the size of the original BTE digital hearing aids, digital open fit devices are ideal for the modern consumer. Small sized, very dainty and hardly noticeable, this device has a thinly moulded sound tube that fits snugly into the ear canal.

Other options include In-the-ear (ITE) and In-the-canal (ITC) aids and Completely In the Canal (CIC):

• In-the-ear (ITE) and In-the-canal (ITC) aids

An In-the-Ear (ITE) hearing aid completely fits in the outer ear, this is ideal for medium to high hearing loss conditions. The components are held in a case that is made of a hard plastic. These ITE aids accommodate additional advanced technical mechanisms that include a telecoil – this is a tiny magnetized coil which is contained in the hearing aid and improves all sound transmissions that occurs during a telephone call for example.

• Completely In the Canal (CIC)

Chiefly obscured in the ear canal, the Completely-in-Canal (CIC) hearing aid is used for medium to fairly severe hearing loss. Due to their small size, the CIC hearing aids may prove complicated for users to both adjust and remove. Also, it may not be able to hold a telecoil in addition to other devices. Hearing aids such as these are easily damaged by ear drainage and earwax. We do not advise that children employ these devices.
