Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a fairly simple procedure and a very effective one. A mild etching solution is applied to the teeth, which forms small crevices in the tooth structure. These crevices create a rough area, allowing a durable resin to bond materials to your teeth. The dentist places the resin on the prepared tooth and then uses a special light to cure the resins onto the tooth's surface. The resin takes effect within a very short period of time, after which the dentist applies the final coat of resin to the tooth. The bonded material is shaped precisely to fit your tooth, which is then finely polished to complete the dental bonding process.

Dental bonding to match natural teeth shades
Resin comes in various colours, matching your natural teeth shades as closely as possible. Due to the layers involved, dental bonding will take slightly longer than ordinary silver fillings as multiple layers are being applied. Typically, this medical procedure should take one to three hours, depending on the individual case.

Dental bonding as a cosmetic procedure
Dental bonding is deemed to be a cosmetic dental procedure, so medical aids may elect not to pay for this. The procedure is pain free, and is a great way to improve teeth from an aesthetic point of view. Many patients who have discolored teeth, uneven teeth, gum recession or tooth decay, may choose dental bonding to improve the appearance of their teeth.

Dental bonding for smokers
Smokers should discuss the dental bonding procedure with their dentist. It may not be the most appropriate procedure in certain cases, as the porous nature of the material is prone to yellowing from the cigarette smoke. Your dentist will be able to advise on the appropriateness of dental bonding in your individual case and give more information on the procedure.
